What is a Growth Management Strategy?
A Growth Management Strategy considers how much population and employment growth is expected to occur over a specific period of time and then develops specific strategies for where and how this projected growth is to be accommodated.
The Need for a Growth Management Strategy
In 2006 the Province released "Places to Grow: Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe". This document sets out a strategy for how growth is to be managed throughout the Greater Golden Horseshoe, including Northumberland County until 2031. This document guides decisions on a wide range of issues, including transportation, infrastructure, land-use planning, urban form, housing, natural heritage and resource protection.
According to the Growth Plan, the County of Northumberland's population is expected to increase to 96,000 people by 2031 and employment is expected to increase to 33,000 jobs over the same time period. To accommodate these projections, the County and its member Municipalities has begun the process of undertaking a Growth Management Strategy.
